Non for Profit Organizations
Non-for Profit Organizations, also non ask Non-Profit Organizations, Not-for-Profit Organizations, or NPOs, are organizations that do not give out its earnings to stockholders. Instead, an NPO uses its funds to help them in the pursuit of their goals. Charitable organizations can be considered as Non-for Profit.
Other NPO examples include trade unions and organizations for the benefit of art. Most countries exempt NPOs from paying income and property taxes.
What distinguishes an NPO from a For-Profit organization is that it does not have ownership. For-profit organizations can be publicly or privately owned and are able to distribute their income to employees and shareholders. NPOs on the other hand, are not owned by any single person or institution. A board usually governs these organizations.
Most NPOs do not operate like For-Profit organizations. While the latter motivates growth in their employees by rewarding them with large salaries and certain incentives, many NPOs won’t be able to do so. As a result, an NPO can find it hard to look for the right people to what they need. This is one of the issues faced by these organizations.
Another issue faced by NPOs is the mismanagement of resources. Another one is known ad Founder’s Syndrome. This occurs when the views of the founder differ from the views of new employees and new foundation heads.
Some of the more popular NPOs in the world include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in the US. Another is the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The Welcome Trust is also another popular foundation. Other examples of NPOs include Amnesty International, Oxfam, Red Cross, SOS Children’s Villages, Carnegie Corporation New Your, World Wide Fund for Nature, DEMIRA German Mine Clearers, UNESCO, Goodwill Industries, United Way, and the NRA.
